RWYC Rowing
The rowing section of RWYC is a friendly, laid-back club who row primarily for fitness and socialising on the water of the beautiful Menai Strait.
We welcome people of all ages and abilities and no prior experience of rowing is required.
Our fleet of boats is housed for most of the year at Plas Menai, and also in winter for a period at Felinheli Sailing Club. This gives us the opportunity to launch all year round whatever the tide.
Regular club outings are (weather permitting) on Sunday mornings from 10am.
Occasionally we arrange additional leisurely outings for picnics, camping, stops at a café or pub along the Strait, trips to Fort Belan and beyond, and even swims from sandbanks!
Competing
For those with a competitive edge, the club also takes part in local league and challenge races as well as organising our own league race from Caernarfon and our Castle-to-Castle Race from Beaumaris to Caernarfon. (There is no obligation for individual members to race in all/any races, but on-land support, e.g. towing boat trailers, assisting with our own races, etc., is vastly appreciated)
League and challenge races are held throughout the year. To compete in these, rowers also need to be members of Welsh Sea Rowing.
Racing categories are Mens, Ladies, and Mixed, and are split into age-groups:
Senior – all rowing crew are under 40 years old. This is effectively an open class.
Veterans – all rowing crew are 40 years old or above.
Supa Veterans – all rowing crew are 55 years old or above.
For Mixed crews, at least half the rowing crew must be female.
There is also a Novice category. Novice crews have no restrictions on gender and no age categories. A novice is classed as a person who is within their first year of affiliation to WSR, once they are affiliated for a second time, they are no longer classed as a novice. An affiliation year runs from 1st April until 31st March.
