Events
A taste of both regularly attended and occasionally attended events, both locally and beyond.
League Races (Northern League):
League races are hosted at Caernarfon, Porthmadog, Beaumaris, and Moelfre. Crews race around a buoy-marked course which is generally 3 to 4 miles long.
Local Challenge Races:
Castle to Castle Race - a 13 mile race organised by RWYC, from Beaumaris to Caernarfon beneath the two famous bridges which span the Menai Strait.
Puffin Island Race - crews row from the historic town of Beaumaris, along the scenic Menai Strait, around the majestic Puffin Island and back through the challenging Puffin Sound to return to Beaumaris.
Porthmadog Pilot Race – a fun race where crews row out along a course, with a passenger (the Pilot) to fetch some treasure, before heading back. Start and finish are both at Borth y Gest. Previously (and weather permitting) the water pistols come out to drench the Pilots on the beaches. Boats then parade back down the trots to Porthmadog Yacht Club.
Madog Dash – A 14 mile race from Pwllheli to Porthmadog or the other way around, depending on tides and weather. Not for the feint hearted, it’s a gruelling race but lots of fun as always.
5 Miles From Home – An international time-trial event where crews compete from home waters. Each crew plots a course of 5 miles and then covers it as fast or as stylishly* as they can during the designated time windows. *In addition to prizes for placings, there is a prize for “best dressed” crew!
Races Further Afield:
Montford Challenge – Hosted by The Shropshire Adventure Rowing Club (SARC) at Pengwern Rowing Club in Shrewsbury, this 2-stage time trial race (first trial upstream, second one downstream) navigates the twists and turns of the River Severn the course ensures adequate challenge for both rower and cox.
Great River Race - a spectacular boat race covering 21.6 miles from Millwall in the East to Richmond in the West, travelling under London's famous bridges.
Monster The Loch – a 21-mile mass participation boat race on Loch Ness run with the wind from either Dores or Fort Augustus.
Semaine du Golfe (Morbihan) – A spectacular international maritime event run over 4 days in the Gulf of Morbihan and held every 2 years.
Ocean to City – Held in Cork Harbour, one of the largest natural harbours in the world. It includes races over four course distances: the 28km Ocean Course, 22km City Course, 13km Monkstown Course and the 4km Youth Course – all finishing to a warm welcome in Cork’s city centre.
